Magical Mantis Shrimp: This project began in Bali and was originally intended to be a batik. The piece evolved to this state during my time at Elmo's House Artist Residency in Batan, Philippines. I was limited by supplies available in the small remote village and thus experimented with natural dyes from the local market as well as utilizing second-hand and scrap fabrics at the residency. The yellow-white portion of the shrimp body is made from folding and sewing the uniquely filipino "Piña fabric" which is made from the leaves of pineapple plants.
